Transmission questions for 1st time user

Howdy gents. Im new to the mac and torrents game and this is my 1st post so im pretty new to this.

When using transmission...
-what do you guys cap your upload rate at and how do you calculate it? I have been hearing various ways and numbers and im curious what it should be for maximum performance? what do you guys have it at?

-what should your max. active transfers for uploading and seeding be for maximum performance? What do you guys have it at?

My cable connection offers around 384Kb/s upstream and I cap my uploads at 20KB/s. That leaves enough bandwidth for digital telephone as well as web browsing for the family. I also have maximum connections set at 50 to not overload the router when others are also downloading torrents.
