Does the ExpressVPN client run on your router or on your computer? Silly question, I know, but it'll help you think correctly about the problem.
A VPN client running on your computer creates a tunnel straight through the firewall/NAT functionality of your Airport router. In other words: Configuring port forwarding in your Airport device will not help you achieve a useful result in that case. Instead you need to configure port forwarding in the actual VPN service.
If you instead were to create a VPN connection from your router, for some reason, the basics for port forwarding is that your firewall needs to know the address of the device to which a port should be forwarded. You'll most likely want to either set a static IP for the device (if it's a stationary computer that never or rarely leaves your network), or set a DHCP reservation for it.
Next you'll want to ensure the local firewall on all devices in your network is turned on and blocking all untrusted traffic, because you never trust the security of a public VPN service, and you never trust a computer connected to a public VPN service.
After that, open the specific port or port range necessary for whatever you want to use the VPN for in your computer.
Finally turn on port forwarding in your network router to the relevant computer and port(s).
