I was under the impression that apple copied the seemingly transparent interface goodies from the guys over at redmond but this screenshot that i found begs to differ:

Quite interesting that OS 10.2 had transparent finder windows (in the background), got rid of them in 10.3 and brought back some transparent effects in 10.5
 
Apple added transparencies in the early versions of OS X to show off Quartz graphics. I don't know why they brought them back. The transparent contextual menus look really cool, but I find the semi-transparent menu bar to be hard to read and pointless.

Some backgrounds look better than others with the transluscent menu bar. That, and it's all about personal taste. To each his own, but I'm not complaining.

That's true. Some look great, like "Stones" and the grass one. However, some look muddy, like "Golden Palace".
