Hi, I am trying to get a transparent background on a desktop icon. I've used GIMP to add a transparency alpha layer and exported as a png, but when it shows on the desktop there is still a white background. However, I know the transparency layer took because when I hit get info there is no white background in the preview. So I am wondering what I am doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated!

You can try using the instant alpha tool in Preview. Simply open the image in preview, and click on the edit button-

then find the Instant Alpha tool and click on it-

and simply drag the cursor over the white background until only the background it selected, then press delete and export the image.
