Tinkertool

Not sure if this helps you, but I have Tinkertool on my intel mac. I don't think it has any issues with the intels, but I put it on when I set up my computer as I hated that the dock was centered on the screen. I also can't remember what the options were that the computer came with, so I apoligize if the transparent option I am talking about is already there. Tinkertool is a free download, I read about it in the OSX.4 Missing Manual and found the link off of that site.

It allows you to change the position and placement of the dock on the screen. It has an option to enable dock shadow or Use transparent icons for hidden applications (not sure if this is a simple version of what you want). Also there is a choice of genie, suck in, or scale for minimizing.
