Can I transplant drives from one Mac to another?

my 2010 MacBook died (GPU failure) and after consideration decided that another 2010 is ok but I want more.
So decided to save for a 2012 13" MacBook Pro.

Can I just transplant my SSD and HDD from the 2010 to the 2012 and it work?

In the 2010 the SSD has OSX and apps and my home folder is on the HDD which lives in optical bay.

If put drives in same place in the 2012 will it work?
I also have time machine (but about month behind) of this configuration too.

You haven't told us what OS is on the 2010 MacBook.

Your probability of success depends on what version of the OS is on the drive that is from the 2010 MacBook.

IF the OS on the SSD is "new enough" to boot the new MacBook, it will work.
If the OS isn't "sufficient" to boot the new MacBook, it won't work (of course).

Here is your solution:
Buy a USB3 external 2.5" enclosure.
When the new MacBook arrives, take the SSD from the OLD MacBook and put it into the enclosure.
Now, do a "test boot":
a. connect external SSD to NEW MacBook
b. press power-on button and immediately hold down the option key until the startup manager appears
c. Do you see the SSD in the startup manager? If so, select it with the pointer and hit return.
d. Do you get a good boot?
IF you get a good boot, take a good look around. Try some apps. Do things work as you wish?

If so, NOW it's time to do the drive swap.
Put the HDD into the enclosure and use it as a backup, extra storage, etc.

sorry, OSX high Sierra, how stupid of me!

I dont yet have the 2012 pro.

temp using a 2012 air (11") just too small and tiny SSD.
