is there anyway to turn off the noise that is made when i send something to the trash by command-delete?

Yep, go to the System Preferences and click on Sound. Then under the tab "Sound Effects" uncheck "Play user interface sound effects." This will get rid of the trash sound and a few other sounds (although I'm not sure which ones they are). I don't know if there's a way to only disable the trash sound.
