Trash won't open

Call me crazy, but sometimes I clean my desktop by moving stuff to the trash. Half of that stuff, though, I end up needing later and drag it from the trash to its appropriate folder. For the last three months or so, clicking on the trash icon in the dock won't open the finder window. It does this randomly, sometimes for days even after restarting the machine and whatnot. I know that I can manually navigate to the location with finder through hidden folders, but is there something really simple that I'm missing as to why this won't open? I'm using 10.5.7 but I first noticed it even before upgrading to Leopard on 10.4.11.
