Evening All,

I bought a couple of iPhone 12 mini's (on the latest iOS) and put prepaid TMo SIM cards in them to test them out. I know that TMo prepaid does not offer International roaming. I also know from past experience that an iPhone without a[n] [e]SIM will not allow you to use the Messages app using Wi-Fi only, unless something has changed.

What I am curious about is if I leave the prepaid TMo SIM in the iPhone, turn off Cellular data and use Japanese eSIM once abroad (Ubigi in Japan) will I be able to use Apple Messages if I also turn off 'Use SMS if Wi-Fi is not available' feature. If not them I will seek out a pure data-only communications solution that will allow me to use voice/video communications with family back home.

I do know that there are some in-Japan solutions that would allow me to receive incoming voice and text at no additional charge, but outgoing would be a per use charge that I am looking to avoid. Those are SIM-based, of course.

Without [e]SIM and connected to WiFi, you can still use Messages to send and receive iMessages (blue bubbles). It only SMS messages you can’t receive (green bubbles). Without cellular, your iPhone basically an iPod.
