Traveling--Can I unlock 3GS on 5.1.1? Please help.

Guys,

I'm traveling in a few days and I want to unlock my old iPhone 3GS. It's currently on stock 5.1.1 firmware and I have ATT. Can someone please tell me what steps I need to do to unlock it to use on other carriers.

A step by step would be nice. Do I first need to jailbreak? I don't really know anything about this. All help is appreciated.

Call AT&T and request the unlock...?

Do I have to pay for that?

I didn't know you could just call At&t and have them unlock it...?

change in policy 2 months ago, out of contract or customers in good standing can get there phone unlocked, call them.
