Trick to hooking up with Wifi?

I run wifi at home with my own network fine, but when i try to connect to wifi at the coffee shop etc., i can't connect at all?

Could someone list the steps to (or give me a link outlining how to) log onto a free and unsecured wifi at like the bookstore or whatever?

I must have missed that in the manual.
