I have a 2900 sq ft 2 story home and I currently have an airport extreme (newest model) centrally located on the first floor. Ethernet ran to the master bedroom, living room and game room upstairs and connected to the main data hogs (xbox, ps4, appletv). My internet service on a good day is 30 down, average 12-15 though. (I live in the country and all I have is wireless internet). Never had any complaints with wifi signal.
Recently built a 30x40 metal garage about 20 ft away from the house and wanted to get wifi access to it. I had an older model airport extreme that i decided to try. I put it in the back corner of the house closest to the garage and connected it wirelessly to the main extreme. I was able to get wifi signal in the garage. Although slow.

Since it worked and was an older N device, I decided to go ahead and get a new wifi setup since Apple no longer supports the airport line. Ended up with the Netgear Orbi RBK 50. Hooked it up and although wifi signal inside and directly outside the house was great, I would lose signal as soon as I stepped inside the garage.
Downloaded an app that will tell me network transfer speeds and found out that everywhere in the house the airport extreme (new model) had much faster transfer speeds over the Orbi. 100+Mbps at each location. Connected to the secondary airport my speeds dropped dramatically, expected of course. Its a N model connected wirelessly. Even hard lined it would be slower.
So I am returning the orbi and picking up a secondary new model airport extreme and going to put it in the back corner of the house. Will end up running an ethernet drop to it for the faster transfer speeds.

Long story short, I guess the new wifi networks aren't for everyone. Unless Im missing something with the Orbi, the airport extremes still can be a viable and even the best solution to home wifi.
