trouble connecting to netgear g wireless

I've been having troubles connecting to a wireless network. It is a netgear wireless g router and I have a 12" powerbook (2nd revision). I can only see it sometimes and when I try to join it it says error joining network or it asks for a password when there isn't one. For what it's worth I'm american and I'm trying to get this to work at someones house in france.

Do you know what sort of security (if any) it has? I imagine the French would use different wireless channels to the Americans but that shouldn't matter. Maybe try deleting the AirPort preferences.

I'm guessing it's not a range issue and I hope you're trying to connect at an absolute minimum distance from the router too (right next to it).
