Righ Click on the trash and select Empty Trash from the popup menu.
Or Go To the Menu and select Empty Trash, there is a combination of keys to do it (sadly I'm on a Windows laptop from work, and I can't recreate it to detail it for you).

Many times when you are not able to empty it, is because one of the files/apps is still being used by your Mac. Close them and then try again.

I haven't use this a long time ago (I think since Mac OS 7) but I believe it still works: force an empty Trash without further complications you hold the option key + request the empty trash.

Deleting a file in the Finder is not like in Windows that you just hit DEL and the file goes to the trash can...
