We've just moved to a new house and since it's an old house, I decided against installing gigabit wiring and decided to go with wireless only. Here's my setup at the moment:
Ground floor: ADSL Modem -> Airport Extreme
First floor: Time Capsule
Second floor: Airport Extreme
Up until today I was just using the Airport Extreme on the ground floor and the Time Capsule. I have several devices hard wired into both of those devices. Everything was fine except wifi on the top floor on our iPhones was very poor, hence why I bought the second Airport Extreme.
My problem is that it looks like my second AirPort Extreme is extending the network from the ground floor's Airport Extreme rather than the Time Capsule. From what I can tell, my ground floor AE should be set as WDS main, middle floor TC unit as WDS relay and top floor AE as WDS remote. However, I can't find any such settings in AirPort Utility 6.0.
The result is that when I connect devices to the top floor AE, I get full wifi signal strength but network connectivity is on a par with dial up.
Edit: It looks like Airport Utility 6.0 removed the ability to correctly set up WDS networks so I've downloaded Airport Utility 5.6 instead. However, I can't find anything relating to WDS networks here. Searching for the setting name brings up two results but clicking on them leads to nowhere.
Edit 2: After trying for ages to get WDS set up with no success, I've given in and gone back to the way Airport Utility 6.0 set everything up. However, I've now moved the top floor Airport Extreme to a different room so that it is directly vertically above the ground floor Airport Extreme. This seems to have done the job and I now get great Wifi on my iPhone with the same internet speed as I do in the rest of the house.
