trouble formating external in disk utility

hello all,

I have this external HDD:

I tried formatting this as a mac osx extended format, but disk utility gives me an error whenever I try to do so. It will only let me format it as a FAT32 file. Is there any other program out there that I can use for formatting HDD's other than disk utility? Thanks!

I suspect that the cause is the partition scheme is set to MBR, when it should be either Apple Partition Map or GUID Partition Table. You can change this from the Partition tab of Disk Utility.

Try deleting the existing partition, then re-create it using the GUID or ??? (for PowerPC compatibility - its one of the choices).

Once you do that, you should be able to partition it.

The ??? you refer to is APM, or Apple Partition Map.
