Trouble importing video to iMovie 09

I'm just learning how to use this program. When I try to import my videos (.MPG) into the program it's impossible. I found a work around my converting them in Itunes to "convert for iPod" (something like that).

Is there an easier way, where I don't loose any quality? Preferably a free converter? Someone point me in the right direction.

Handbreak will convert it free for you. ther is ano5ther program, but I can't recall right now. Quicktime Pro will do the job (probably, but you'll have to pay 20 dollars for that).
