When I send a Word attachment in Mail the recipient (also using a Mac) gets it, but can not open it. The Mac doesn't recognize the file. The file is 32 kbs, but when it arrives it's only 990B and can't be opened. In Mail I opened edit, went to attachments and clicked on "Send Windows Friendly Attachments". That solved the problem, but why should I have to do this?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" option strips out the file's resource fork, which is the part of the Mac file which OSX uses to associate the file with a creating application, whereas Windows uses only the file extension to do this. It sounds to me like this particular recipient was receiving only the resource fork when this option was not selected, though why this would occur, I have no idea.
