Trouble reinstalling installation DVD after new hardrive.

Macbook harddrive crashed (flashing question mark folder etc.). Bought new harddrive (2.5 in SATA), and reinstalled. Don't have original installation DVD so used legally acquired Mac OSX. Now instead of folder, the Apple logo appears with spinning gears but otherwise unresponsive. Can't install or eject DVD. Suggestions?

Did you hold down the C key while booting to trigger booting from the optical drive?
