I have an older macbook that I got in the summer of 07 it operates on OS X.

The other day I was trying to post something on facebook, and the little pinwheel started turning then the comp shut down on me.

I then got to see the gray screen with a folder icon with a question mark on it.

I called a friend wo suggested using the OS X install disc to help reboot the system .... well that did not work

Now it will boot up to the install screen, allow me to select a language etc but when I am supposed to select the location there is nothing to select and I am stuck.

Ive tried just about every other option I have seen on the internet. Holding Command+Apple Key + P+R, holding S, C, N, .... during start up. NADA.

Help if you can.

Thanks

Are you using any full disk encryption like PGP?

Folder w/ flashing question mark means it cannot find any bootable OS.

It's possible your HD has died.. hopefully you have a good back up?

yep sounds like failed hdd same thing happened to me on my hackintosh netbook, was watching a video in itunes, pinwheel, comp shut down and then wouldn't start up, replaced the hdd, reinstalled os and it was fine

I think these macbooks were covered for this specific issue, google it.

I think I heard something about that a month or so ago as well.

Same thing happened to me last year. It is a hard drive failure. Sucks I know. :(
