i’ve had trouble syncing imessages from my old ipad mini 4 to my new 2021 10.2 inch ipad.

i think the error was because i chose not to transfer aps and data. i wanted my new ipad to have a fresh start and choose the apps i wanted to install instead of all the old garbage.

at first i couldn’t get the messages to sync at all. after being in chat with apple support, they scheduled a callback for tomorrow. they couldn’t figure it out either.

i finally found that the exclamation point in the red circle could be because the date and time was not set correctly. so i changed that. finally after resetting the settings and changing the time i see messages and contacts.

however, it’s only messages and contacts from january 2020 and earlier. i’m missing all messages and contacts from this year.

one other thing i noticed is with the notes app. all notes have synced properly. but on the folder icon it says “folder not available”, but all the notes seem to be there.

do i need to do a factory reset and start all over? or is it somehow pulling the imessages from an old backup? i do have icloud turned on for imessages but they’re not showing in icloud.

this post can be closed/removed. after attempting several times, it finally worked. it might have been a mismatch in the settings causing it, such as region or timezone. not sure exactly but it's been resolved.
