Trouble Syncing VIP list

Is there any special method for syncing the VIP list with ML mail? It syncs through iCloud contacts right?

I use iCloud for my contacts and I use gmail for email through Mail, but for some reason the VIP list doesn't sync to my iPhone 4. Any help and/or tips would be appreciated.
