Trouble syncing with contacts on MacBookPro

IP5 with iOS7, I enter a contact on my phone and it doesn't sync to my contacts on my MBP. It does sync to my gmail contacts, but I don't use gmail as my primary email service. I use the resident email program on the MBP, and need access to the contacts on the MBP. I've checked and checked my settings, obviously I'm overlooking something. Need some assistance here guru's!!

I take it you've enabled iCloud contacts on both the iPhone and the MBP, and you're using the same iCloud ID on both?

When you add a contact on the phone, is it being added to your iCloud contacts, or to some other provider like Yahoo, for example? AFAIK it's only iCloud contacts that will get synced automatically by Apple.
