Using Mojave. I've used this MBP2018 for two years. Yesterday, I powered it off completely. Today, when I turn it on, the screen does not turn on. The screen remains off. All that happens is the touch bar displays the Esc key. There is no indication of anything else operating. Nothing I do can get me to my account.

I've found that if I boot it into recover mode, the screen also stays off - however, if I then close the laptop for a minute, then re-open it, then it displays the recovery mode screen.

I've entered recovery mode and tried manually selecting a boot disk, but when I select my internal hard drive, it says that it can't be opened unless I first update. But if I choose to update, it just immediately shows an error saying "An error occured installing the update. Try again or select another startup disk". Trying again yields the same result.

I wrote this post using the browser in recovery mode, so cannot attach pictures.

Any clue what to do?

You have a 15” I believe? It reminds me of a problem I had a few years ago on an early beta of MacOS where (due to a bug in GPU switching) the only thing you would get during boot was a black screen. In that case if you connected an external monitor you could get the machine to boot OK, once booted everything worked OK. I spent some weeks not restarting the MBP if I did not have a mointor available.

For your other problem. Have you run a disk check in disk utility? Have you tried internet recovery?
