I'm something of a new collector of vintage Macs and purchased a 17" iMac G5 that was already loaded with 10.5.8 Leopard. However, I wanted a clean install, so used a Leopard disc I already had to erase the drive and reload the OS. The install seem to go fine, although it seemed slow to finish the last 1% or so. However, when I tried to install 10.5.8 via Apple software upgrade, the installer would hang. So, I downloaded the 10.5.6 Upgrade from Macintosh Repository. When attempting to install that version, it asked which volume to install to. The current drive, which is the whole volume has a red exclamation mark on it and a note that says it does not meet the requirements to install 10.5.8. I find this odd because it had 10.5.8 on it when I received it. I would also think that a newer drive would meet requirements. I wonder if it was a permissions issue, but can't find anything which suggests that. (The previous owner(s) had different users and permissions set, but I assumed the new erase and install would wipe all that out.) However, I may not know all the places to look. I have attached screen shots of the message and the current drive configuration. Has anyone else seen something like this or know what the problem may be. I am hoping its something easy :). Any advice appreciated.

Was the Leopard disk you used specific for that model iMac G5? If not, you're going to need a retail Leopard DVD which is likely going to be hard to find. You can find them on eBay but they're usually expensive.

No iMac G5 ever shipped with Leopard. So there are no such disks.
That's true, but note that the OP stated his iMac G5 was already loaded with Leopard and that he wanted to do a clean install. He then stated that the install he tried failed. Which is why I believe he used a hardware specific version of Leopard. Could have been for a model other than an iMac G5. It's a mistake that many folks make. Doesn't matter if the G5 ever came with Leopard or not.

To do a clean install of Leopard on that G5 he needs a retail Leopard DVD set.

OP is getting the message that you see when you try to install the 10.5.8 updater on anything OTHER than 10.5.7.
OP, you need to install the 10.5.8 combined updater, which should install on successfully on any 10.5 version.
The 10.5.8 updater (not the combined updater) will not install on anything other than OS X 10.5.7 - because, as the error states, it "does not meet the requirements".
The 10.5.8 combined updater will work.

Thank you. I will try this. Really appreciate this suggestion.

No - OP said that he was able to install Leopard (which wouldn't have worked using a hardware-specific version) but that the subsequent update to 10.5.8 failed. In any case, the problem and correct solution have already been determined. :)
Yes. 10.5 installed, but wasn’t able to update to 10.8.5. First time I have asked for help. Am gratified with the responses.
