Trouble with AVI files

I am having trouble syncing my iPhone and believe the issue is AVI files. iTunes used to just skip over these files, but now it seems iTunes can't decide what to do with them. I am running latest mac software except I don't have the latest iLife. I use OS 10.6. Any thoughts?
