Trouble with imovie clip durations

I'm having difficulty with imovie clip durations. Whenever I set the duration, it always comes out as something else, eg. if I set it for 4 secs, it comes out at 3.05 secs instead. If I add a transition, sometimes it changes the durations of clips around it.

Any suggestions?
