trouble with installation of new SSD

So i put the SSD in carefully, and when I turn on the mbp to do the OSX install, i get to about the third step where it asks me to choose a disk and I get no options in the white box. Do I need to format the SSD first? The directions in the booklet didn't explain what happens if nothing pops up in this stage. Sorry for the vagueness but new mac user here and unfamiliar with it all so far.

In what way?
The guide I linked to explains what to use as format and partition map scheme and what steps to take.
Or do you mean something else?

i just purchased the macbook pro so I have no data on the standard hdd. I don't plan on running boot camp or anything, so would i do 1 partition?

1 partition will suffice, as Boot Camp Assistant will help you create a second one if you need to.
