I'm trying to help my coworker install a second hard drive in her Power Mac G5 (dual 1.8 GHz model), and I'm running into some troubles and I can't figure out what the problem is.

I followed the instructions in the manual for putting the drive in, and attaching the SATA cables, and everything, and booted up the computer and everything looked good. I started copying things over using SuperDuper! and it would barely get into copying before the drive would disappear. So, I would disconnect and reconnect the cables and try again. Same result. Tried using CCC, same result.

So, I thought that it might be the SATA data cable. I had her buy another one, and today we got through all the copying of the files via SuperDuper! and tried booting from that partition. It went through the Apple screen, then to a blank white screen and just sat there...forever.

I power down, restart (to the original hard drive) and the second one doesn't even show up...until I'm halfway through this message. Now it appears in Finder just fine. EDIT: And now it's gone again.

What further troubleshooting steps can I take, or what do I need to do to make this her bootable drive? Any ideas?

EDIT: I thought the original drive might be the cause of some ticking we're hearing, but after removing that drive, the ticking sound is still there. I'm thinking this means the new hard drive is faulty.
