trouble with software update 10.6.8 combined

Hello everyone,
I have a macbook pro 2009 and am running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and need the necessary updates in order to run Mountain Lion. When I click on the software update under the apple icon at the top bar, it partially downloads the 10.6.8 combo update and then stops and gives me a message saying that either the download was damaged or it can't be saved on the disk, and a few times it said that there was a network error. I am using the apple airport extreme and it creates a wireless network from my college's internet connection. I am going to try to download the update over a different connection this weekend to see if that makes a difference. Otherwise, does anyone have advice for me? I appreciate your help very much....

You could try the standalone updater instead of using Software Update.

Follow Nermal's advice about the standalone...it's the best way to go.

Also, I recommend you put 8GB of RAM in that MBP to run ML, if you haven't already.

Look it up at ifixit.com and see if it's something you can handle.
