Troubles W/ Verizon Tethering Over Wifi Iphone 5

Hi guys,

I've had a lot of trouble connecting my iphone 5 (with ios6) to my MBP for tethering over WIFI. It seems that it takes forever for my computer to notice the hotspot and then sometimes it doesn't even see it. Also, when I try to my friends to use the wifi hotspot, they sometimes don't see the SSID pop up on their computer or the connection times out.

Any ideas on what the problem could be? Is it my computer or my phone?

Also, what advantages are there to connecting over bluetooth as opposed to WIFI?
