Hello:

I am attempting to troubleshoot an application, Fusion Studio 18.1.3, that crashes on launch on a 2021 MBP15 M1Max operating under MacOS 13.2.1. I have tried the following with no success:

  1. Rebooted the computer.
  2. Booted the computer into safe mode and attempted to launch.
  3. Uninstalled with the vendors uninstall application.
  4. Manually uninstalled to make sure all files on the computer have been deleted including the application, files in ~/library and /library.
  5. Did a fresh install of the operating system.
  6. Restored the computer from a time machine back-up when I knew the software was launching.
  7. Contacted the vendor, Blackmagic Design, but they have not been able to come up with a solution.
I have tried everything that I know but have not succeeded. What suggestions might the MacRumors community have for me to try?

Don

What version are you using?
From the App Store https://apps.apple.com/app/davinci-resolve-studio/id900392332
or from the official site DaVinci_Resolve_Studio_18.1.4_Mac.zip https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/studio ?
What’s in the crash log?
Hi Bogdanw,

Thank you for writing. I made an error in my post and have since corrected. The application that is failing to launch is Fusion Studio 18.1.3. Davinci Resolve Studio 18.1.4 launches as expected. Also, attached is the first portion of the crash log. There are several exceptions.

Does this help?

Don

The full log, except the last personal part, would have offered more clues.
Looking at the installation package, it seems to install some old Python files.
Python 2 has been removed from macOS https://www.macrumors.com/2022/01/28/apple-removing-python-2-in-macos-12-3/
and the version installed in Ventura is surely higher than 3.6. I have Python 3.9.6 in Monterey.
Maybe try to delete those
/Library/Python/2.7/site-packages/BlackmagicFusion.py
/Library/Python/3.6/site-packages/BlackmagicFusion.py

Hi Bogdanw:

Attached is the full crash report. In the meantime I will attempt to delete the files you suggested.

Hi Bogdanw:

I deleted the files you suggested. However, Fusion Studio crashed on launch. I re-booted, and launched again but got the same crash result.

Hi Bogdnaw:

Thank you for investigating and sending the URL about EXC_BAD_ACCESS. I read it thoroughly. I am not a programmer so I had some difficulty understanding.

Help me understand what might be going on. I successfully ran this application for one year on an M1MAX MBP16. Then suddenly, it just stopped working. I am not certain exactly when it stopped working--maybe it was with the change in operating system to Ventura.

In any case, BlackMagic Design reports that others are not having issues. Why would it be that just our machines that are having issues launching the Fusion Studio?

I’m not a programmer either. And I don’t have a license for the app, so I only got as far as the starting screen and once had a crash identical to yours, but in Monterey.
If you have an older version of Fusion Studio, try to install it.

The first crashes started with version 17.4.3. I upgraded version 18.1.3 and the crashes continued. AFAIK, there is no way to return to previous versions.

Do the crashes happen if the Mac is connected to the power supply?
I only tried on battery.

Hi All:

I finally have a solution to Blackmagic Design Fusion Studio crashes. The problem was related to a file on my computer located at /~Library/OFX/Plugins/CineMatch.ofx.bundle. The deletion of CineMatch.ofx.bundle allowed Fusion Studio to properly launch.

Special thanks to Boganw for your suggestions. While your suggestions were not the solution, they did allow me to advance the troubleshooting process.
