I recently got back from a six month long business trip abroad and started working out again. I've been trying to make my workouts more healthy and efficiently and have switched from one a day vitamins to GNC Multi Vitamins Sport (for Men), which from what I've read is suppose to be more effective when used with the GNC protein shakes. I find that taking the vitamins turns my urine in to a more greenish color... It's a very popular brand of vitamin, I was wondering if anyone else experienced this? Thanks in advance.

I am a woman and don't take that brand, but I do notice my pee turns yellow-er after a few days of taking my multis...

If you are concerned, I'd stop taking them for a few days and see if your pee turns back to a normal color. Then, when you start taking them again, hydrate really well so you are peeing almost clear. If your pee is still green then something weird is going on (if you pee clear you've peed out all the excess vitamins, that's what turns your pee yellow when you take multis.)

You're probably getting overdosed on some kidney-filtered vitamins.

Sounds like your peeing your money down the toilet. Any vitamins your body cannot process gets passed out of the body in urine. If you are hydrating well and your urine is still yellow or green, it means your body is probably only using 10% of what you're giving it.

In addition, if you are in fact overloading your body with suplements in this fashion, it will definitely be putting added stress on your kidneys and liver. Not good at all.

Lastly, of specific concern would be how much Vitamin A is included in the multi. Unlike many other vitamins, Vitamin A is fat soluble, not water soluble. Water soluble vitamins behave as above, i.e. any excess your body does not require is passed out via urine. However fat soluble vitamins such as Vitamin A do not - they build up in your liver. This is not good. The daily recommended intake for Vitamin A is 5000 IU for adult males, and in all honestly, an average healthy person with a good diet probably naturally consumes this much by normal means. Something to think about.

Just some of my thoughts.

I went to go look at the label for the vitamins, because I've been looking to start taking some myself.

No, the B's are within the normal range for multis.

However based on my reading, (IANAD) the copper in one of these is already 2 x as high as you need. If you are taking two of these, I would be concerned about too much copper.

Also the multi's B6 and Chromium are at the upper end of normal range - again I would not take 2 of these per day.

Are you drinking the protein shakes? Your urine could be colored by a high amount of protein. I think you are wasting your money. you would be better off investing in equate multi vitamin with trace minerals.

my pee goes back to normal after i stop taking them

To avoid stressing your kidneys, drink water before and after taking the vitamins. Since it's impossible to know exactly how much our body needs, we're stuck with a pre measured dose based on what the vitamin company decides to make. Someday, we'll have daily evaluations for the optimum amount of any one vitamin, herb, food, liquid, until then, we're stuck with guessing!

My advice would be to not take a vitamin every day. Let your body flush itself out a little. Chaos theory is where it's at!
