Troubleshooting Help - MBP won't boot

MBP starts up, gives the chime, starts to boot, then shuts down, about 15-20 seconds into the boot process. Every time.

Tried flashing the parameter ram, no difference. Data on the hard disk is OK - if I boot to target disk mode, I can read all the data on the HDD just fine. But I just can't boot the computer to use it.

Any ideas of where I can even start troubleshooting?
