Okay, here's the deal. Recently I bought a Netgear GS108 8-port Gigabit switch and an Apple PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet Card for my Power Macintosh G4 Sawtooth, which only has 100BASE-T. The idea was to use this new hardware with my Power Macintosh G4 MDD's on board 1000BASE-T.
Going from the switch to the Sawtooth I get no link light when it's set to auto-negotiate. When manually set to 1000BASE-T/full-duplex/1500 MTU it links and works perfectly on the switch.
However, when the MDD is connected using its on-board gigabit, the link light comes on for 1000BASE-T a couple times and then falls back to 100BASE-T.
Manually setting the MDD to the same 1000BASE-T/full-duplex/1500 MTU gets a link light with no connection. No LAN connections work, etc. Setting to 1000BASE-T/full-duplex,flow-control/1500 MTU gets no link light at all.
Even connecting the computers directly won't work.
Tried changing cables, etc. Using the Apple Gigabit card in the MDD card works at 1000BASE-T, so the problem lies with the on-board controller.
Any suggestions for what else I can try? I'd prefer not to use another PCI slot as I'd have to remove a PCI fan (all my slots are full!)
