The 8TB version power consumption is higher than 860 EVO, I notice in the spec is 5.5W when compare to 860 EVO(4W)
Can I put 870 QVO 8TB into a USB 3.0 SATA enclosure and used it without issues? (like eject unexpectedly due to high power consumption)
because normal USB 3.0 just 5V 1A, 5W
does any try that?

You might consider a USB3.1 gen2 enclosure like this one from Oyen Digital:

It has "DC power in" so you could plug in an external power block.

Hmm I wonder if possible to have USB a to DC cable, otherwise the portability will be the problem

Just got one, and tested it, no need for external power, works fine so far.

Hi zhpenn,

I am planning on buying the same Samsung 870 QVO SSD 8TB hard drive and I am glad that I found your post since I have the same question.

Would you mind if I ask you what enclosure you bought for the 8TB SSD to use as an portable external hard drive?

Many thanks!

I use the ugreen USB aluminum enclosure 2.5, which uses the ASMedia 235CM chipset.
with a USB-C to A cable till today works fine.

Really appreciate it!! It looked there're not many enclosures with ASM chipset but I found some along with the one that you bought. It was very helpful info from you. Appreciate again. Best!

I am looking into 870 QVO SATA III 2.5" SSDs and would like to house each one in its own external case. Are you aware of any cases have two USB-C form factor ports? I want to daisy-chain a few drives over a TB2 connection and use the second USB-C port as a TB2 pass-thru. Alternatively, I am looking into Drobo for a solution that houses multiple SSD drives.

Any recommendations? Thank you.

do not use Drobo, it is slow and unstable, sometimes you it can not be recognise by Mac, I sold my Drobo. buy a NAS with 10g Ethernet port and raid them is better option

zhpenn, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, 10GHz Ethernet is not an option right now. Also, I was looking at Drobo DAS, not NAS, devices. Any thoughts on the SSD enclosures as I described them?

I know you were talking about Drobo DAS, I sold my Drobo DAS 5C, it is slow and unstable.
QNAP has some NAS with usbc port or TB3.
I saw some RAID dual-drive 2.5inch enclosures before, but they need external power

Apologies; I misread your post regarding the Drobo. Thanks for the reply.

Hijacking this thread :) — I have been using a Samsung 870 QVO 8TB SSD (in a Cable Matters Gen 2 USB C Hard Drive Enclosure) for months, happily, on my iMac Pro running Catalina. However, the SSD doesn't work with my new 2021 M1 Max MacBook Pro running Monterey: I can see the files, but if I try to open any of the files, or move a file to the SSD drive, Finder goes spinning rainbow wheel for a minute, then the drive is suddenly unmounted.

Samsung tech support dismissed it, saying that since the drive works on the iMac, the drive is clearly fine and it must be Monterey's incompatibility. Apple support did a lot of sleuthing with me and decided that the 870 QVO's firmware (which hasn't been updated since before Monterey) must be incompatible with Monterey.

Has anyone else dealt with this issue?

USB 3.2 10gb/s, holds 2 SSD's in RAID 0, 1, span or independant drive mode.

Have the same issue. I actually posted a thread solely to discuss but I didnt get any response. I tried two different enclosures, a USB-C, a USB3, then tried both on the OWC TB4 hub and they didnt work and have the spinning wheel. Everything stops responding until you unplug it. I dont know if this is a hardware or software issue

Update for @antonjosh and anyone else who cares:

Problem solved! It was the enclosure.

I switched the Cable Matters enclosure I was using (https://amzn.to/3DS2ur5) for an Other World Computing Mercury Elite Pro Mini (https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-mercury-elite-pro-mini/usb-c). Now the Samsung SSD works on both my Intel/Catalina Mac and my M1/Monterey Mac!! Problem solved!

Thanks for the suggestion, @justashooter!
Im not really sure if this is an enclosure issue since I have tested both on USB-C and USB3. I have updated to Monterey 12.1 and it seems stable but I will wait a few days more to say if it solved the issue.

Hello @antonjosh @ohnokay

I am new to this forum and I found this thread via much frustrated googling!

I recently purchased a Samsung 870 QVO 4TB and I was wondering if either of you thinks the MERCURY ELITE PRO MINI USB-C Bus-Powered External Storage Enclosure would be suitable to efficiently use for a MacBook Pro 16' 2019, running Catalina 10.15.16?

Also, I would be selecting the 0TB enclosure option for this purpose? Are there any other options, or additional items I would need to choose for this enclosure?

Sorry if these questions sound stupid but I have never fitted an internal SSD for external enclosure usage before, so it is all rather new to me...

Thanks
Charlie

Based on my experience, that enclosure will work just fine.

Yes, get the 0TB enclosure. You shouldn't need any other options or items.

Putting your internal SSD in the enclosure is a super easy process. You can do it!
