Hi, all, I'm considering getting an Apple Watch. I'm immuno-suppressed, and I have been, if not quarantining, significantly self-isolating for a while now. I'd like to determine what size I'd like, which would usually mean trying one on. Has anyone here been in an Apple Store recently, and observed how they are handling (or even if they are doing) Apple Watch tryouts?

I work for o2 in the UK and we sell different sizes and colours but customers can’t try them on for obvious reasons but they can return them within the 14 day returns period no problem if they don’t like it or exchange it for a different size , colour or model.

Thanks for the quick reply! I expected the answer was/is going to be "buy and exchange if necessary." Just thought I'd look into it to make sure.

No problem I work with all models in my store every day so please feel free to ask questions if it helps you make a decision

Oh I don't have much in the way of questions. I don't think I'll really know what size I want until I see and feel it on my wrist, lol.

Ok this might be a deal clincher here for you. If you goto the smaller size certain complications will display differently because of less screen size.

Just an example the noise complication on the larger watch shows how man dB and a meter where as the smaller one only shows the little meter

Aha, that makes sense. There is a particular complication I am interested in, for the personal use case that finally put me over the top in deciding to buy one. I will investigate that in this context. Thanks!

You’re very welcome! Enjoy your new purchase what ever you choose.

One thing to note, the 38mm S3 is tiny compared to the pictures. Or maybe my eyesight is failing lol.

Again the S3 is the last watch in the original sizing format and is quite tiny in comparison to the S4 & S5 and likely what ever the S6 is when it comes out.

Personally I wouldn’t go any lower than the S4 having had them all there is a huge speed difference between anything lower than that and the benefit of the extra complications on the bigger screens are awesome.

Maybe it helps you decide to know that the Apple Watch pictures in the Apple Store app are the actual size of the respective Watches.

Apple is now closing more stores every day throughout the country again due to the pandemic, so your chances visiting are limited, but in a sense, I wouldn’t visit an Apple Store and touch those watches anyways if it was me [Regardless if they’re ‘sanitized‘ or not].

A viable solution is to measure your wrist the best you can, and I find the straps that are ideal that have the most contoured fit to your wrist is the sport bands (A.K.A-Fluoroelastomer), ridiculously comfortable and are popular not just because of the color options, because of the way they actually fit.

You're right...I tried to reach out to the Apple Stores local to me, and at least one of them which had reopened had closed again. I think the result is going to be as some have advised: assume a size, order the size (and band) I think I like, and return it if I'm wrong.

(As someone with CDO, I get uneasy doing it that way. I want to figure it all out and then purchase only when I've come to the definitive answer. What is CDO? It's the same as OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order like they should be.)

(I was actually leaning towards the Sports Loop, but I do hear that it does wear out over time and that it doesn't dry out well in water. I've seen mixed reviews as well on the Leather Loop, that I love when I see it online but I have seen reviews that are less than stellar. But that's all for a different thread comparing bands, lol.)

The advice to look into the functionality of important complications feels like great advice, and I am looking into that as well. I'd hate for that to be the reason I go for the larger size if the smaller size feels better. But we'll see!

My local stores don’t have any watches to try although have them on display in a glass case. As a general point Apple also go above and beyond our government regulations regarding hygiene etc which is impressive (I’m not in the US )

Regarding sport loops they are supremely comfortable and my experience is they don’t wear out. As for water I usually remove mine and dry it and it dries very quickly, obviously that involves having more than one band :).

I'm surprised they won't allow any in-store try-ons. I know why, but how is it different from testing out a MB or iPad?

Touching fewer items is always better, but I would think everything is being wiped down after every interaction. I know my self-serve grocery store does this.

Plus having hand sanitizers at the entrances would also help.

I see what you are saying but I’d say trying a watch on is a bit different and also managing the whole situation .... multiple watches multiple bands etc ..... the iPads and macs are all spaced out and they do have sanitizer at the entrance as well as temp checks .... also here it’s enforced to wear masks everywhere :)

Looks like the key complication I'm interested in does not change based on the face size. :)
