I have a 2021 16 inch Macbook Pro with the M1 Max chip, I'm trying to boot to a external hard drive, I hold the power button and it shows up as a driver but when I click on the drive than click continue it dose nothing - and if I change the startup disk it says the macOS needs to be updated - I did that and it still did not work- should I just erase the drive and start over or what should do?
I'm getting this error message.

Did you create the bootable external drive using the 2021 MBP?

If so, how did you do it?
- CarbonCopyCloner?
- SuperDuper?
- Fresh OS install onto the external drive?
- Something else?

I created MacOS Beta external drive on a 13 inch intel MacBook Pro - I was trying to see if I could get it to boot on a M1 Max MacBook Pro

"I created MacOS Beta external drive on a 13 inch intel MacBook Pro - I was trying to see if I could get it to boot on a M1 Max MacBook Pro"

My guess is ... NOT going to work.

Try again.
This time, use the 2021 MBP as "the Mac you do the creating from..."

It is a lot harder to create a bootable drive on a M1 Mac since you have to give it authorization

I don't have an m-series Mac (yet).

But in order to boot from an external drive, don't you need to do this first?
- boot to the recovery partition (or whatever the m-series uses in lieu of that)
- open a utility there called "startup security"
- DISABLE security so that the Mac can be booted from an external drive
????
