I've been using 16e since June. It's a great phone, despite all the stupid things being said on the internet. It's good for most things, pretty much everything. But I'm excited about the iPhone 17. Sometimes I want more.

I live in Turkiye and here the iPhone 17 costs 1885 dollars. 16e is currently around $1000. I think I can sell the 16e for between $850-$900 on the second hand market. I'll buy the 17 with a credit card, and when I sell the 16e, I'll put the money back on the credit card. Installment plans are prohibited for phones in Turkey. However, with the credit card debt, I can pay it off in a few months with the minimum payment. It's a bit of a stretch, but I can manage.

Why do I want the 17?

* It has a front like the Pro.
* Better cameras. I want to create content for YouTube and try out some short films or series. (I know, pros are better.)
* ... (I think that's it)

Does it sound stupid when you think about it?

I'm unsure and stressed. If I buy it, I feel like I'll have a device that satisfies me more until the 20th anniversary iPhone.

I would never buy a phone on credit.

I made mistakes like that when I was young (getting into thousands of GBP of credit card debt to buy music CDs … it was almost an addiction). I had to learn the hard way why that’s a bad idea.

Twenty years later my life still has some scars from that financial mess.

An iPhone 16e is a great phone, better than the phone most people on the planet have. If you try to make a YouTube channel with it, it won’t hold you back (but YouTube is hard).

If you really have to have a 17, save up until you have enough to buy it by selling the 16e. Then actually sell it and buy the 17 with cash. This way forces you to be realistic about the value you can get for your 16e.

Good luck.

You probably felt the 16e would satisfy you too, and that was as recently as June. This cycle will continue until you change something in you, not the phone.

You only lose 10% to 15% for selling your second hand iPhone? Your world is really wonderful

i wholeheartedly second the opinion of people in this thread letting you know that CONTENT is king.
its WHAT you say, rather than the tools you use to make it with.

pro equipment will not improve any poorly created content.

you will know when you have come to a point in your creative life when pro equipment would be a good investment when you have revenue flowing in from the content you are creating with current equipment.

this is true for whatever you do in life.

the other thing that could be good is to use the money to take content creation courses that help you learn to maximize the equipment you already have, to create meaningful content that viewers would want to pay for and visit.

the urge to buy cool toys that make us look good is in most of us.
separate that urge (how you look) from rationally analyzing how you go about making a career decision, or even how you decide if a hobby might be fulfilling for you.

You can make bomb content using a iPhone X. Use what you’ve got! The difference is negligible. Spend whatever money you’ve got on good audio. Get a good wireless mic like DJI has and the camera quality is already really good.
A wireless microphone is a great idea, but if you’re doing talking-head type stuff, you can even just use another phone (a friend’s phone or whatever).

Check out this amazing demo of what is most important for good sound: getting the microphone close to the talker. At 2:06 in the video:

I don’t think it’s going to improve anything within the uses you intend to use it for to any significant degree.

I would only buy it if it’s not a financial stretch. If it’s going to cause any kind of financial anxiety, it’s 100% not worth it.. if you have the means then why not get the best one?

Financially it is stupid. You simply cannot afford the phone. Btw, you don’t need to go into debt for this. You can create all your content and movies with your 16e.
Its a Turkish mentality. The phones they have and the cars they drive has a significant importance on their social status. They have the highest inflation, low life standards but still try to upgrade their phones every year. Once I brought my Macbook for a fix to Apple store in Istanbul and the tech guy told me he had a customer that bought an Iphone dividing the payments 7-8 different credit cards. You can see it from his post. He is contemplating buying an Iphone 17 which will put him in financial debt UNTIL 20th anniversary phone which will make his financial situation worse.

You're right, it's not worth it. I gave up on buying the 17.

@cemark I'm not a show-off, I don't buy new clothes all the time, I've never bought anything to show off. I just bought the iPhone because I wanted to use it.

When i look at it, there's nothing I can't do with 16e. I can shoot movies, vlogs, and pictures. I play Cod Mob, and that's enough. Getting a 17 is an uncomfortable expense for me right now. I actually took up this topic because of this great hesitation. Living in a country like the US, where money is valuable, and living in a country where money is worthless, have very different perspectives on money. $50 in the US and $50 in Turkey are not the same, funny but true.

Thank you.
