Trying to direct connect Mac o PC

I just bought this very cool iMac and now i am trying to tranfer my music and photos from my XP pro Dell to my Mac. i am using Direct Cable Connection with a twisted pair cable. I can't get either computer to see each other. My dell is a work comp and I can't help but think that they may have locked it somehow. I really don'n know anything about network connections. Any help would be appreciated. Burning CD is not an option because the dell has only a cdrom.
Please help
Any other info to help diagnose this problems?

on your mac, go to:

System Preferences-->Sharing; turn on personal file sharing.


in the finder press Command+k :

type in afp://peeceeIP

and you then enter your UID and Pass

and start transfering!
