iPod touch trying to downgrade ipod touch gen1 firmware

I am trying to downgrade from firmware 3.2.1 to 2.2.1 on first generation Ipod touch. In order to get a Macally Ivoice three to work with fring or skype. I have tried putting it into DFU mode and when I try shift+restore we get error 20 or error 1601.
Is there a way to get back to firmware 1.1.1 and then upgrade to 2.2.1?

The only way to downgrade the firmware is by restoring from a backup which was made with the previous OS. Any other method will result in the 1601 error.
