I want to format my macbook pro and reinstall osx

Problem is, i can't boot up the machine via the install disc

I've tried holding down the c key, i've tried holding down the options key and selecting install disc.

Just loads forever until screen turns black.

Any suggestions ?

What happens if you try running the installer from the disc when it's mounted on your Desktop?

I can start the install, but the machine reboots when there's 54 mins left, then it just loads forever until it boots in osx

Update: I tried rebooting again and holding in the options button.

Suddenly booted from the disc

Which is great

You're sure the disc is the one that came with the MacBook Pro? Which version of OS X is it? Is it one of the versions where it verifies the disc before installing? If so does it get through the verification?

Yes, the disc is labeled 13" macbook pro, and i've only got one.

I purchased the machine little over a year ago, so it's osx snow leopard.

Weirdly enough it suddenly started working, bit worried about the state of the dvd

I asked about the disc, because people tend to get these mixed up and not realize it. Have you used the disc before this? If not, it could be defective. I believe that if you contact Apple they will send you a new set for a nominal shipping cost. Good luck with the install.

I've used it about 4 times before, never been a problem before.

Finished installing it now, everything seems to work fine, hopefully it won't be a problem again
