Trying to get a mac to work with a mp4

Why oh why can't a machine touted for design and video work damn well use common formats.
I have tried getting two mp4 files to be combined and burned to DVD. Idvd and Imovie cannot work with the files or say they will and then crash after 2 or so hours.

So how do I get my mac to combine two 45 minute mp4 files and create one DVD?

The .mp4 files might be MS-MPEG4, which iMovie can't handle without a QuickTime codec. I recommend the Perian + Flip4Mac combination.
