Trying to get photos from hard drive back to Macbook

Total newbie to hard drives, but a I have a Seagate external drive that I used with time machine to back up my Mac because I needed more space. After backing up I would delete multiple albums to get those extra GBs. Now that I purchased a much larger hard drive, I want to bring those old albums back but I can't find a way to import just the library. Also, now with the El Capitan update iPhoto won't even open for me to look through the album. Step by step easy instruction if there is a solution would be very much appreciated!
