Trying to hook my ibook g4 up to my tv

I got all the wires and hooked up my ibook to my tv through the mini-vga out, but my tv doesn't pick up a signal. My computer recognizes that it's hooked up to something, but there's no display. Do I have to change any settings on my computer or tv? Any ideas?
