Trying to import from old iMovie 06 to iMovie 08

I just upgraded to a Macbook Pro, and I want to import an iMovie project that I was using on the old iMovie. When I import all the data, some of it comes up with the screen all smooshed, or with just audio, etc. The transitions aren't there either. Also, it just imports all the clips, but doesn't have the actual work I've done on the project. How can I import it so that I can pick up editing right where I left off with everything looking and running smoothly?
