Trying to install 2.2 but progress stopped

Trying to install 2.2 on 1 gen iPhone. The progress has been sitting at 75% of the backup process for about an hour (took 2 hours to get to this point). This is my second attempt. The first one stalled much earlier and then told me my iPhone was no longer connected, even though the physical connection was never broken. So then it aborted the install for 2.2.

Any suggestions?

try restoring the phone straight to the 2.2 update, there might be a problem with your current 2.1 software
