Trying to install OS to external HD from a different computer

I have an older iMac that is giving me problems. When I boot it up, it gives me the grey screen with a flashing apple and folder icon with a question mark in it. I removed the HD and re-formatted it on my MBP, and I tried to boot the MBP from the iMac's installation CD, but I get the same flashing icons on my MBP, which is probably because I have a different install CD in my MBP.

My question is, is there a way I can install the iMac's installation CD onto the external HD, from another computer?

No, but you should be able to install it on the external drive with it plugged into you iMac.
