I have this .avi file and first when I click to open it in quicktime it says I need additional software to open this file. Then I click to open with VLC and there's no picture or audio but the time ticker is moving??

The file is 232MB

ETA: It was originally a .rar file which I used unrarx to get it to an avi if that makes any difference.

Any suggestions?

I think Perian opens AVI. Install that if you haven't already. Alternatively you could try converting it to something else with MPEG Streamclip [free from macupdate.com]. Then it might work  Probably best to save a copy of the original though in case it doesn't work.
