I am trying to rebuild my 2015 15" Macbook Pro. It had version 12.x MacOs (Monterey)installed. I am selling it to a friend as I just purchased a new Macbook. I have used this mac for almost 10 years so I had a ton of stuff installed so I wanted to restore it back to factory. I was able to get MacOS restored but it restored back to the original OS that was on the laptop when I purchased it (OS X yosemite) 10.10.5. I am trying to get Monterey installed again as I believe that is the latest software that can still be installed on this model. When I go to software update, I am not getting an option to install any OS and when I go to the App store and search for MacOS Monterey, I don't get anything in the search results.

Is there a way to manually download and install Monterey?

Thanks,
Burch

On an Intel-based Mac: Choose Apple menu

> Restart, then immediately press and hold one of these key combinations, depending on what you want to do:

  • Install the latest version of macOS compatible with your computer: Option-Command-R.

should do it...

or macappstores://apps.apple.com/app/macos-monterey/id1576738294?mt=12

Thank you so much for the replies. I now have the MacBookPro upgraded to Monterey.

Another question, I have seen a youtube video of some software that will allow you to put a newer version of MacOS on older Mac computers. Has anyone tried that? Was thinking about trying to get this updated to Ventura but not sure it's worth it. Just trying to keep this older Macbook as up to date as I can. It still runs very well.

OP:

If you've successfully installed Monterey, just sell it to your friend THAT WAY.

Let HIM make the decision as to whether or not he wants to fool with OCLP (or whatever) to try to "hack in" a path to a newer version of the OS.

Otherwise, he could start having problems, and then he'll probably be looking to YOU to fix them...

I've never tried OCLP, but from what I see in the forum, using it can be fraught with pitfalls and obstacles.

Good Point. I'll just leave it alone. He only needs the computer for basic things so it should be fine for him.

stay with Monterey I love that version

OCLP is IFFY!
some times that works, then after a day or two that crashes.

Yep I tell friends that want to update an old Mac to look into OCLP, and not ask me any questions about it because I've never used it ;) supporting that is at the very bottom of my wish-list.
